Qualification Program

The RTG ‘vivid’ will train doctoral researchers for scientific professions and medical research in diabetes-related biomedical disciplines at universities, clinical departments and public research institutions as well as for professions in R&D and diagnostics at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies which is necessary to adequately address this problem. Two educational tracks will be established to meet the specific needs for successful graduation of both PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) and MD (Dr. med.) candidates.

Schematic of the educational and training program

PhD and MD doctoral researchers will enroll in an interdisciplinary training program which provides a structured, supervised and quality-controlled approach for acquisition of

  • critical skills in scientific areas related to the topic of the RTG (‘Scientific Module’),
  • proficiencies and knowledge required for successful careers in biomedical professions (‘Transferable Module’), and
  • extra qualifications related to unique ongoing human observational, longitudinal studies and translation of research results into the clinic (‘Translational Module’).

In joint lectures, seminars, workshops, practical courses, regular retreats and meetings with their Thesis Advisory Committees (TAC), doctoral researchers will acquire specific knowledge related to diabetes research and essential professional skills. PhD and MD doctoral researchers will conduct collaborative work within the RTG projects and take advantage of joint technologies and resources. PhD doctoral researchers will finish their thesis within three years, whereas MD doctoral researchers should complete their experimental work within 9 months.
